I was writing the holiday story and wanted to know if we had expanded the character limits or are we still at 10,000?

Thanks!

Not blind! There are getting to be so many threads and topics that sometimes it's tough to remember where you saw something or where it's most likely to be hiding. And I'm convinced there are certain threads that are hiding from me ...

LOL... thanks Kelly!

I think you may be right about threads hiding... I was reading one, and then logged out, logged back in and it was lost ... until today.

To the best of my knowledge, Laurie, the polls are still up for both the holiday story and the length. I believe Alice has the voting for the premise on the calendar until Wednesday. As for the length, I don't know if that poll will end when the premise poll ends or not, although it seems likely.

I knew that the challenge 2 premise poll was still going but thought that I was pretty safe in starting my story a little early. I was unsure though, if the length had been decided on. Thanks for the info.

The length poll will be used as a guide for not only the current challenge, but for challenges in the future.  Thus I don't plan on closing the challenge two poll on the 6th, but do plan on using it to set the rule for what we do on challenge two.

Please go vote in both the length, and the number of submissions polls.

I have already voted for both. Did I understand you to say that the length poll is going to continue past the premise poll for challenge two? And the current results will be used for this challenge?

Thanks,

Yep.

This is a general pollicy setting poll and will determine the character count until people tell me we need to change it.

What ever the results are when Wednesday rolls around will be what we run with for Challenge 2.  Where ever it lands a month from now will set the word count for Challenge 3, Challenge 4, etc until you tell me we need to change it.

Does this mean that we will be able to vote again in the future if we find that what we previously voted for isn't working for us?

Sounds great - thanks for the clarification.

Of course.  As soon as there is some indication we need a new poll, I'll put one up.  You are stuck with whatever you voted in this poll, though.  If there is a clamour for a fresh poll in the middle of Challenge 2 then I'll scratch the current poll and start all over.  However, I'm expecting us to all come to a mutually tolerable agreement and settle in.

The nice thing about a larger character count is that you get the option. You can still write 10,000 characters if you want with the 5,000 extras if you need them. 15,000 is only the max. number, right?

Exactly.

Of course you will also face 5,000 more characters of someone else's efforts.  In many cases this will improve character development - such as in Squash Blossom Necklace where I had to cut the entire scene involving Brenda because I ran out of room.  In others it will simply be longer because the author wasn't forced to think about what was truly necessary and what could go.

Those extra characters can add up in reading time.  But if you're having fun, who cares?
