The email for submissions is:  fanlit-subs@chrisjournal.com

Attachments of .doc, .rtf, or .txt files work better than just pasting into the body of an email -- formatting and paragraphing is often lost in the body of email.

To use formatting in your subs:

1.  Indents should be spaces, not tabs -- tabs don't show up on the forum.  Remember that these spaces count towards your character count if you're running close.

2.  Italics = [i ] words here   [/i ] (without the spaces)

3.  Bold = [b ] words here   [/b ] (without the spaces)

4.  Underline = [u ]  words here  [/u ] (without the spaces)

5.  Strikethrough = [s ] words here  [/s ] (without the spaces)

6.  It's best to leave a return between paragraphs.  It only uses one character and is well worth it in terms of readability.

7.  To center something, use [ center ] *** [ /center ] (without the spaces

Thanks for the info, Chris.

When switching from one scene to the next, is it better to stick an asterisk or something in to indicate a break, or should I just add an extra line in between scenes?

Hmmm.  If (enter) (enter) (enter) = 3 characters, then does (enter) (enter*) (enter) = 3 characters too?   Huh

Maybe I just answered my own question.   Cheesy

I think the hardest part of writing is revising. And by that I mean the following: A novelist has to create the piece of marble and then chip away to find the figure in it.

Most people seem to  be putting in a character.  I ususally hit return at end of para, another return, then ~ or *, then two more returns.  So that's 4 characters, altogether.    Some folks just put an extra return in there between paragraphs, which is fewer characters, but in all honesty, that sort of thing doesn't add up the way the paragraph indents do.  In a 4-5 page story, 5 spaces indentation on each paragraph adds up quite fast.  But there are only 2-3 scene breaks, so that's just a dozen or so chars.

Thanks for the input.  Looks like I'll just keep doing what I'm doing.

I remembered the thing about not indenting paragraphs from Avon, so everything I spit out is in chunky chunks.  Cheesy

I've gotten so into the habit of counting characters that I caught myself counting characters instead of words on NaNo.  I kept having to remind myself that lots of characters was a good thing!

Okay, this may be a dumb question, but I didn't submit to round 1 and 2 so I'm asking now.  If we send an e-mail with a .doc attachment, do we still need to do the formatting "stuff" like you've explained above, or can this site read italics, etc. from the Microsoft Word attachment?

Thanks so much for ALL you do!

Yep, the tags have to go in for it to show up on these posts.  But you can also include formatting using MS Word, if it makes it easier to work with, and then just insert the tags at the very end before sending.

We all forgot about that poll that closed two days ago. I think that a single chapter is 15K and a multi chapter challenge is only 10K.

I wasn't. I had thought 15K until I looked again.
